RX 7900 GRE Desktop Graphics Card launched globally and is a great pickup at $549

AMD is attempting to compete with Nvidia’s RTX 4070 by releasing the Radeon RX 7900 GRE on a global scale today. This relatively new GPU costs the same $549 as the RTX 4070, but it performs better and has 16GB of VRAM as opposed to 12GB.

RX 7900 GRE

Prior to its release, the RX 700 GRE was only available in China and was largely made with 1440p gaming in mind. In an attempt to provide the RTX 4070 with some serious competition, AMD is now making it available everywhere. The RX 7900 GRE is another choice to match with the newest high-speed 1440p OLED monitors hitting shelves, as it is around 11% quicker at 1440p than the RTX 4070.

Only a few weeks after Nvidia introduced the $599 RTX 4070 Super, it lowered the price of the RTX 4070 and released the $549 RX 7900 GRE. AMD’s RX 7900 GRE even matches Nvidia’s RTX 4070 Super in select titles, thus this card will surely drive down the price of both Nvidia’s $549 RTX 4070 and AMD’s $499 RX 7800 XT.

RX 7900 GRE Desktop Graphics Card Hardware

For the RX 7900 GRE, AMD is relying on its board partner designs. I have been trying the model from XFX, which is based on the reference design from AMD. At 13.2 inches, the card’s triple-fan layout is extraordinarily lengthy. Indeed, that exceeds the length of an RTX 4090, so make sure your case can accommodate it.

The Radeon RX 7900 GRE has a total board power of 260 watts, which is 60 watts greater than the RTX 4070 from Nvidia. AMD suggests a power supply of 700 watts for this card, which is once more higher than the recommended power supply of 650 watts for the RTX 4070 and 4070 Super.

The RX 7900 GRE has one HDMI 2.1 port on the back and three DisplayPort 2.1 outputs. Although you won’t be able to utilize DisplayPort 2.1 at 4K (up to 480Hz) with HDR enabled if this GPU can’t deliver the kinds of high frame rates at 4K, it’s still encouraging to see AMD keeping its Radeon cards future-proof. DisplayPort 1.4 is limited to Nvidia’s 40-series GPUs.

AMD is likewise remaining true to the tried-and-true eight-pin connectors in this instance. The RX 7900 GRE has two eight-pin connectors, so you don’t need to bother about bulky adapters or the newest 12VHPWR power connector.

The 16GB of VRAM on AMD’s RX 7900 GRE is among its best hardware features. Compared to the 21Gbps on the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Super, it runs at a lesser speed of 18Gbps. On the RX 7900 GRE, however, AMD has chosen to use a 256-bit memory bus, meaning that the memory bandwidth is 576GB/s as opposed to 504GB/s on the RTX 4070 / 4070 Super.

RX 7900 GRE Desktop Graphics Card 1440p Benchmarks

I used Samsung’s 32-inch G7 display and AMD’s most recent Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor to test the RX 7900 GRE at 1440p. With a maximum refresh rate of 240Hz, this monitor is perfect for 1440p high-resolution gaming.

I tested the RX 7900 GRE against the RTX 4070 as well as a number of additional Radeon and GeForce cards. In most of the games I played at high or ultra settings, the RX 7900 GRE was able to get 100 frames per second or more, which makes it a perfect 1440p GPU.

At 1440p, the RX 7900 GRE outperforms Nvidia’s RTX 4070 by about 11%. Watch Dogs: Legion is the only game where it falls short in terms of ray-tracing performance due to AMD’s FSR upscaling technology not being supported. Otherwise, the RTX 4070 from Nvidia is easily defeated by the 7900 GRE.

RX 7900 GRE

The RX 7900 GRE easily outperforms the RTX 4070 and even almost matches the RTX 4070 Super in Metro Exodus Enhanced, even at both super and severe settings. Even by today’s standards, Metro Exodus Enhanced is difficult, especially at these high settings.

Although the RTX 4070 Super outperforms the RX 7900 GRE overall in most games, the difference is quite little given that you must pay an additional $50 for Nvidia’s most recent GPU. If you want to use DLSS or any ray-traced games, the extra $50 is certainly worth it because DLSS is still significantly superior to FSR 2 and AMD’s most recent FSR 3 technology is still only supported in a small number of titles.

RX 7900 GRE Desktop Graphics Card 4K Benchmarks

I used Acer’s 31.5-inch Nitro XV2 display, which has a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz, in conjunction with the RX 7900 GRE. Although I wouldn’t suggest the RX 7900 GRE for 4K gaming, if you’re prepared to turn down the settings a bit, it can provide some entry-level 4K support thanks to its 16GB of VRAM.

In 4K, the RX 7900 GRE outperforms Nvidia’s RTX 4070 by an average of 14%. Given that it’s a comfortable margin, choosing 4K becomes more alluring, particularly if you currently own a 1440p monitor and plan to upgrade soon. However, Nvidia’s RTX 4070 Super outperforms the RX 7900 GRE at 4K, winning the majority of tests.

AMD has FSR 3, which uses a mix of frame creation and temporal upscaling to increase 4K frame rates. AMD has also introduced Fluid Motion Frames, which adds frame creation to all DirectX 11 and 12 games, however there aren’t many titles that support it now.

Although we haven’t had enough time to include Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) testing in our comprehensive benchmarks for the RX 7900 GRE, some preliminary testing in games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Forza Horizon 5 showed a lot of potential for better 4K and 1440p frame rates.

Conclusion

For $549, the RX 7900 GRE is an excellent 1440p card. At the same price, it easily outperforms Nvidia’s RTX 4070 and even approaches the $599 RTX 4070 Super. With 16GB of VRAM, you can even enjoy 4K gaming at reduced settings or just have peace of mind knowing that you won’t experience any problems if you turn up the visuals, even at 1440p.

There will undoubtedly be more games this year and beyond; we’ve already seen titles like Diablo IV and The Last of Us Part I surpass 12GB of VRAM use at 1440p. This makes 16GB of VRAM much more necessary for achieving this performance goal, unless you don’t mind slightly lowering the graphics settings.

It is evident from the RX 7900 GRE that the RTX 4070 from Nvidia and even the Radeon RX 7800 XT from AMD are a touch pricey. Like with many of its other cards, AMD is launching the RX 7900 GRE globally. Cards from Acer, ASRock, Asus, Gigabyte, PowerColor, Sapphire, and XFX are among the vendors that will be carrying the RX 7900 GRE.

If the $549 price stays the same, Nvidia will undoubtedly come under pressure to react because anyone wishing to upgrade to 1440p will find Fluid Motion Frames and the RX 7900 GRE’s 1440p performance to be an extremely alluring combination.
